Retaliation Cases Against Employers Continue Growing

The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is seeing more and more retaliation complaints by U.S. employees, with such charges accounting for 47% of all charges in 2017. Employment law attorneys say that the increase is in part due to the fact that the employees who bring retaliation charges have a higher degree of success than those that bring a regular discrimination charge. There is a lower standard of harm that must be proven for a successful retaliation lawsuit thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court case, Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad vs. White. While…

Why You Should Consider Disability Insurance

What would happen if you were permanently injured or became too ill to work? You might qualify for disability payments from Social Security, but would you be able to survive on the average payout of $1,171 per month? Maybe you have some savings, but would it be adequate to cover your living expenses until you're old enough to collect retirement benefits? If you answered "no" to either of these questions, you should consider buying disability insurance. Disabilities are surprisingly common: One in three women and one in four men will have a disability that keeps them out of work for…

If you have an adult child who is still financially dependent on you in some way, it's critical that you secure appropriate insurance coverage. Issues that will affect coverage include if they are a full- or part-time student, where they live and how old they are. Homeowner's insurance Under a homeowner's policy,…

Does a Homeowner’s Policy Cover Your Home Business?

Thanks to advances in technology and the Internet, more and more people are running home-based businesses, either full-time or part-time. But will a homeowner's policy cover the risks of a home-based business? In nearly every case, the answer is no. The only exception to this might be if a homeowner's policy has a special endorsement, such as to run a catering company from your home. Yet fewer and fewer companies offer such endorsements. Additionally, some policies may give a very limited amount of coverage for business property, such as a computer. Sixty percent of home-based businesses lack adequate business insurance,…
